For my fourth burger adventure I visited a restaurant that is a favorite amongst students at The University of Texas at Austin. Dirty Martin’s Place is not only close to campus but is full of history just like my last post.

Dirty Martin’s Place on Guadalupe St. opened in 1926 and was called Martin’s Kum-Bak. (Photo: Dirty Martin’s Place)

In 1926 John Martin opened a little restaurant named Martin’s Kum-Bak which served hamburgers, shakes and other popular items of the time. It was a small place with a dirt floor There were only eight bar stools inside and a small drive through outside. The original Martin’s was neighbored by a local gas station until 1957 and later a bar named The Friendly Tavern. In the mid 1960s the walls between The Friendly Tavern and Martin’s were knocked down. The two buildings were joined to create a back dining area for the restaurant giving more indoor space to patrons. This is the same building that provides a comfortable, friendly atmosphere to customers today.

The location of Dirty Martin’s Place on Guadalupe St. has not changed since it opened in 1926 but the structure of the building has been expanded to accommodate customers over the decades. Here the Budweiser Clydesdales are pictured in front of Dirty Martin’s Place. (Photo: Dirty Martin’s Place)

Dirty Martin’s Place is conveniently located on Guadalupe St. and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant’s atmosphere is very casual and social. When I visited the restaurant with some of my friends on Saturday afternoon the weather was beautiful. My friends and I were able to walk to the restaurant and sit on the patio. We were able to hangout on the patio, listen to music and enjoy the pretty day while eating our burgers. Dirty Martin’s Place is not fancy by any means but it is a great place to relax with friends while listening to music or watching a game. Though Dirty Martin’s Place may seem like a college student’s paradise, the restaurant attracts college graduates and families as well. This restaurant is a fun and convenient spot for those who live near The University of Texas at Austin as well as those who are visiting the campus.

Today Dirty Martin’s Place offers indoor seating, bar style seating and outdoor patio seating. The restaurant’s seating is great for watching sporting events and listening to music with friends. (Photo: Dirty Martin’s Place)

Dirty Martin’s Place has been serving their burgers the same way since 1926. The hamburger meat they use is very fresh and never frozen. The restaurant offers 10 different Kum-Bak burgers. Their most famous burgers are the “O.T. Special” and the “D.H. Special”. The restaurant’s menu also offers a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, and hot dogs if someone isn’t in the mood for a burger. The restaurant gets a fresh delivery of bread, meat and produce every day. Dirty Martin’s Place offers a great selection of burgers with prices that will not break the bank. A cheeseburger and fries will only cost you somewhere around $6. Good food and a good price is a winning combo in my book.

The Chili Cheeseburger served at Dirty Martin’s Place is smothered in chili and topped with cheddar cheese. This filling burger is an affordable $5.50. (Photo: Dirty Martin’s Place)

On Saturday I order the D.H. Special with tater tots on the side. The D.H. Special is a hamburger patty on toast with grilled onions, double cheese, tomato and pickle. My meal was by no means healthy in anyway but it was so delicious and worth the splurge. Even though it may not have been the healthiest burger that I have tried thus far on this burger journey, the bun, meat, and toppings were all very fresh and incredibly tasty. The quality of the food was not sacrificed at all due to the lower prices. I would recommend Dirty Martin’s to anyone looking for a convenient restaurant, social environment, affordable prices, and delicious food.

I ordered the famous D.H. Special burger when I visited Dirty Martin’s Place. This delicious burger uses two pieces of warm toast instead of a bun. (Photo: Dirty Martin’s Place)

Dirty Martin’s Place is open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m and has happy hour every Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
